Let’s start by talking about what an air conditioner is. An AC does not generate coolness the way a furnace generates heat. That makes no sense. What an air conditioner actually does is remove heat from homes. And that’s what a heat pump does to heat your home—but in reverse.
In order to remove heat from an indoor space, an air conditioner evaporates refrigerant. In doing so, the system draws heat out of the air in the house. That heat is then released into the air outside as the refrigerant is condensed in the outdoor unit.
A heat pump uses this same cycle to heat homes. It just has to run it in reverse. When you heat your home with a heat pump, refrigerant is evaporated in the outdoor coil. It’s brought inside, after being compressed to further boost its thermal energy and it’s condensed indoors. That allows you to transfer heat from the air outside into the house.
Because transferring existing heat in this manner is more energy efficient than generating new heat. Only a small amount of electricity is used to facilitate the heat transfer process. That means you pay less to heat your home.
Plus, our climate is absolutely ideal for heat pump use. We don’t deal with the subzero temperatures they do in other parts of the country. Your heat pump is not going to be overwhelmed by the winters.
But there is one bit of information we’ve saved for last…
Know how we talked about heat pumps operating like ACs in reverse? Well, that’s true.
But they can also just work as ACs.
That means you can both heat and cool your home with just one system. A component in the heat pump called a reversing valve makes this possible. When in the heating mode, the heat pump operates as detailed above. Switch it over to cooling in the summer, though, and you can use it to cool your home. Pretty neat, right? We definitely think so.
